Break Out of Boring with French Escape Rooms: 6 Reasons Why They Are a Must!

Have you ever wished your students were more motivated, more collaborative, and just plain excited to learn French? If so, it might be time to turn your classroom into a French Escape Room!

What's an Escape Room?

An escape room is a game-based experience where players solve puzzles, uncover clues, and accomplish tasks within a set time limit to “escape” from a scenario. In the French classroom, this engaging format can be used to review content, introduce new material, or build essential skills such as critical thinking – all while keeping students on the edge of their seats.

Why Use French Escape Rooms in the Classroom?

  1. Active Engagement
      • French escape rooms turn students into problem solvers. Instead of passively listening, they’re decoding messages, piecing together clues, and thinking critically about the material they are presented with

2. Enhanced Collaboration and Communication Skills

      • Students work in teams to accomplish their goal. Whether you’re teaching middle schoolers or high school students, French escape rooms foster meaningful interaction and teamwork, and get them using the target language in the classroom

3. Curriculum-Aligned

      • Think escape rooms are just fluff? Think again. You can align French Escape rooms with your curriculum goals, whether that is reviewing French vocabulary, verb conjugations, reading comprehension, or exploring cultural traditions. When you design (or buy) the puzzles, you can reinforce exactly what you’re teaching!

4. Cultural Immersion

      • Many French escape rooms include real-world francophone destinations like Paris, Montréal or Nouvelle-Orléans. It provides your students with a virtual field trip without leaving the classroom!

5. Motivation Guaranteed

      • The race against the clock, the excitement of cracking a code, the satisfaction of “breaking free” – French escape rooms are a recipe for intrinsic motivation

6. Adaptable to Any Subject or Grade

      • French escape rooms can be easily scaffolded to fit the needs of your learners. Whether you’re teaching beginners or more advanced learners, you decide the vocabulary, grammar structures, and cultural references that best suit your students’ needs.
      • You’re in control of the level of difficulty, making escape rooms a perfect fit for differentiated instruction

Tips for Success

When planning your escape room for the French classroom, I would encourage you to start simple. Reflect on whether you want to try a digital or physical escape room for your students. Then, brainstorm your theme and storyline that you will use. A good narrative keeps students engaged and gives context to the tasks.

Afterward, create 5 – 10 puzzles that your students will solve. These could be riddles, matching vocabulary to its definition, mazes, audio clues, or sequencing tasks. You can decide how complex you will make these puzzles, the hints that you can give students, and whether they will have access to technology to help them in their search.

After your students have completed their first French escape room, you can then reflect on the strategies that worked and what can be improved for next time.
