I’m a high school teacher in Ontario, Canada and our French curriculum strictly focuses on francophone cultures in Africa and Asia for grade 9. When I started planning for my Core French class, it was extremely hard to find French reading comprehension materials that identified French-speaking communities on these continents. Everything that I found was solely related to France or Quebec. Therefore, I started to think outside the box and did some research to create my own!
Why French Reading Comprehension is Important
Reading in French is an exciting way for students to increase their understanding of the language and improve their language skills. It is also a vital part of learning about Francophone cultures around the world. Other benefits of reading in French :
- Students learn French vocabulary in context that they can then use in conversations
- Expose students to a variety of grammar and verb tenses
Reading aloud will help students improve their French pronunciation (if the proper pronunciation is modeled after their mistakes)
Students of all levels can benefit from reading texts in French; however, it is important to pick texts that align with your student’s level of understanding.
